If I recall the correct behaviour is that you will walk directly ontop of it before starting to light the logs?

I can't find any videos to back this up, but the way I remember it was you definitely went over top of the fire to light it.
Sometimes if you were lagging behind, the client would show you lighting it from the side, and then your character would rubber band over top of the fire then walk west.
